What Is FUP in Mobile Recharge Plans?

Published: 1 April 2026|Updated: 18 June 2026

FUP, or Fair Usage Policy, is a limit set by telecom operators on how much data or how many calls you can use at full speed within a plan, after which speeds drop sharply or extra charges apply, even on plans marketed as unlimited.

How Does FUP Apply to Data?

Most so called unlimited data plans actually include a daily high speed cap, often 1GB, 1.5GB, or 2GB. Once you cross that cap, your speeds typically drop to 64 Kbps or 128 Kbps for the rest of the day.

For full definitions see our fair usage policy and other glossary terms.

How Does FUP Apply to Voice Calls?

Unlimited voice plans in India usually allow up to 250 to 300 outgoing minutes per day, or around 1000 to 3000 minutes per week. Calls beyond the FUP are charged at standard tariffs, around 6 paise per second of call time.

This is true across Airtel recharge plans and other operators.
