Port Your Number (MNP Guide)
Mobile Number Portability lets you switch operators while keeping your existing number. Here is the exact 6-step process used in India in 2026.
- 1
Check eligibility
Your current SIM must be active for at least 90 days. Clear all outstanding postpaid dues before porting.
- 2
Generate UPC
From the number you want to port, SMS 'PORT <your 10-digit number>' to 1900. You will receive a Unique Porting Code (UPC) valid for 4 days (15 days in J&K, NE, Assam).
- 3
Visit new operator
Walk into the new operator's store or order a SIM from their app. Submit Aadhaar / passport, photograph, and the UPC.
- 4
eKYC verification
Complete biometric or Aadhaar OTP verification. You will receive a new SIM (or eSIM QR code).
- 5
Wait for activation
Porting completes in 3 working days (5 in J&K). You will get an SMS with the exact switchover time, usually overnight.
- 6
Insert new SIM
After the switchover SMS, remove the old SIM, insert the new one, and restart the phone. Your number is now on the new network.
Common rejection reasons
- Outstanding postpaid bill on the current number
- Number is less than 90 days old on the current operator
- UPC code already expired (valid only 4 days)
- Pending corporate or family-plan obligations on the SIM
